Our Song
I Found You - Nate Smith
We met on December 17th, 2021 Country dancing with friends at Denim & Diamonds. Vanessa was home from college for Christmas Break and had gone out with one of her friends to indulge in her new hobby: line dancing. Nathon was in the habit of going out Country Dancing a week all over Phoenix.
The dance floor at Denim & Diamonds was alive with the twang of country songs and the shuffle of cowboy boots. Vanessa and her friend showed up early to the lively scene for the crowd of line dancers.
Later in the night, Nathon, a seasoned country dancer, found Vanessa from across the room and asked her to dance. As the two spun around the dance floor, they engaged in joyful conversation and laughed as Nathon taught her how to country swing.
When the song came to a close, Nathon walked Vanessa back to her seat and thanked her for the dance. He walked away and Vanessa was left to watch all of the amazing dancing. Only a few minutes went by, and he returned with a confident, "Hi."
As the hour passed, Nathon and Vanessa discovered they had more in common than just their love for country dancing. They talked about their favorite hobbies, shared passion for coaching, and sparked and excited conversation about their shared faith in Jesus Christ.
Toward the end of the night, the two ended their time on the dance floor to one last song: Hurricane by Luke Combs. Denim & Diamonds was closing its doors but Nathon couldn't let the evening end without making plans to see Vanessa again. He asked for her phone number, and she gladly gave it to him with a giddy smile.
Little did they know that this chance meeting on the dance floor would mark the beginning of a beautiful journey together. Over the course of Vanessa's Christmas Break, Nathon and Vanessa spent more time together not just dancing but hiking, trying out new restaurants, and sharing their values and aspirations.
Their connection deepened with each passing day, and by the time Vanessa had to return to college, they knew they had something special. They decided to pursue a relationship and eagerly anticipated their next meeting.
Their story was just beginning, a tale of two souls brought together by the love of dance, and bonded by their love and faith in God.
On a chilly New Year's Eve in Arizona, Nathon's heart was pounding like crazy. He had a big surprise in store for Vanessa, his partner of a year, and he couldn't wait to see her reaction. This was going to be a New Year's to remember.
Initially, they had planned to spend a quiet evening alone, but Nathon had to sneakily change things up. He'd teamed up with his family to surprise Vanessa by inviting her to join them for the celebration.
Earlier that day, they'd hung out with Vanessa's family, enjoying a belated Christmas gathering, which kept her clueless about what was coming. As evening fell, they headed back to Nathon's family home to watch "When Harry Met Sally" and wait for the clock to strike midnight.
As the minutes ticked away, Nathon was feeling both excited and nervous. He had written a heartfelt letter, reminiscing about their amazing year together, and he couldn't wait to share it with Vanessa. He'd also been secretly practicing a special song on his guitar, "I Found You" by Nate Smith, which he planned to sing to her after she read the letter.
Finally, it was approaching midnight. Nathon excused himself, pretending he needed a bathroom break. He slipped into a snazzy black button-down shirt and returned to surprise Vanessa with their "Midnight kiss."
When she saw him, Vanessa couldn't help but grin and said, "Wow, you look really nice!"
With a furtive grin, Nathon responded, "Well, it is New Year's Eve."
They shared a sweet kiss at midnight, but the best part was yet to come. Nathon then whispered, "I've got something to show you."
He led her to the backyard, where his family had transformed into a magical wonderland with twinkling lights and roses, leading to the center where his guitar and the engagement ring waited. Vanessa's jaw dropped, and she exclaimed, "Is this really happening?!"
With tears, Nathon affirmed, "This is really happening."
Vanessa, still teary-eyed, read the heartfelt letter out loud, savoring every word. And then, in the midst of all the emotions, Nathon strummed his guitar and started to sing their special song. It wasn't the most polished performance, but came straight from the heart.
Amidst the fireworks lighting up the Arizona sky, Vanessa couldn't contain her joy as Nathon asked, "Will you marry me?" Through her tears, she whispered the most important word of the night: "Yes."
Under the starry Arizona sky and amidst the New Year's fireworks, their love story took an unforgettable turn as they now start their next great adventure!
